Dutch Parties Focus on Finances, Investment Before Coalition Talks
Leaders Rob Jetten of D66 and Henri Bontenbal of CDA emphasized the need for clarity on budgetary regulations and long-term investment strategies before agreeing on a shared policy plan, according to a news outlet.
Currently negotiating without additional partners, the two parties anticipate completing a preliminary version of their coalition agreement within the next two weeks.
Prior to the discussions, Jetten highlighted the necessity for a more robust investment climate in the country, while also seeking answers on how to “foot the bill” for substantial spending commitments.
Bontenbal noted that the existing Dutch budgeting framework does not sufficiently differentiate between consumption and investment.
He argued that structural investments should not be treated the same as routine expenditures.
“You lose one, and you gain from the other. So you really want to make a distinction,” he stated, proposing that the upcoming government should consider adjusting fiscal rules to better support long-term economic objectives.
Monday’s negotiations included several high-profile participants, such as Laura van Geest, chair of the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM); Kim Putters, director of the Social and Economic Council (SER); Ingrid Thijssen, head of employers’ organization VNO-NCW; and Dick Koerselman from trade union FNV.
